Yes, 3-D in the 1950's!! This is a fad that has come back in full force. Frankly, I'm sick of 3-D movies! Every animated movie is now 3-D, or they are re-releasing a bunch of classics in 3-D. (Example: Titanic) WHY?! But back in the 50's 3-D Played an important role in saving the film industry.
I Love Lucy
Shows like I Love Lucy and Little Rascals were taking over the world of television. People were staying home to watch television programs instead of going out to "the show."
In order to achieve the 3-D effect, the films were played on two separate reels in the theatre. Around 1953 there were some 5000 theatres across the USA that were equipped with 3-D technology.
This is actually one of my dad's favorite horror movies. We have it at the house, but I had no idea that it was originally in 3-D.

Sadly, people complained too much about the strain on their eyes due to reels not being angled correctly. Towards the end of the 50's, this fad died out completely.
